What is the purpose of NewsMatch?

Journalism has the power to amplify diverse perspectives, hold the powerful to account, and build social cohesion. Unfortunately, over a third of newspapers in the U.S. have closed since 2005, leaving thousands of communities without a lifeline to critical and relevant information about the issues that affect their lives.

NewsMatch – the largest grassroots funding campaign to support nonprofit news in the U.S. – strengthens the financial sustainability of news organizations that are nonprofit, nonpartisan, and dedicated to public service.

NewsMatch grows and expands who funds the news in our communities. Since 2017, the campaign has helped raise $475 million to jumpstart emerging newsrooms and support independent media outlets that produce fact-based, nonpartisan news and information.

NewsMatch aims to maintain the steady growth of small-dollar contributions through NewsMatch campaigns, while dramatically increasing the number of major donors, local foundations, and small businesses supporting journalism.

The long-term vision for NewsMatch is to ensure relevant and reliable news for every community across the U.S. by strengthening the financial sustainability of news organizations that are nonprofit, nonpartisan, and dedicated to public service. A collaborative effort between newsrooms, funders, and industry service organizations, NewsMatch is managed by the Institute for Nonprofit News (INN), a nationwide network of 500+ independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan news organizations.
